NZCF Rank Equivalence

The Army (New Zealand Cadet Corps) and Navy (Sea Cadet Corps) Cadets use a similar rank structure, albeit with different names. Rank translates directly across the three corps; refer to the table below for the appropriate rank equivalence. Note: The rank of Under Officer has been phased out and replaced with Officer Cadet.

  • Rank is a privilege that must be earned.  NCOs must be role models at all times, both inside and outside of the Unit.
  • All NZCF rank insignia is based on that of the parent service, so must be worn with respect for the traditions of the NZDF.
  • Many cadet activities are combined with other Units or Corps, especially promotion courses.  You need to be able to recognise the rank and position of the Officers and Cadet staff from Army and Air Cadets.
  • The cadet ranks in the NZCC and ATC have similar names and insignia, but the SCC ones are different.  A chevron in the other two Corps is associated with rank (e.g. Corporal, Sergeant, etc) but in the SCC it means a Good Service Badge.
  • The officer ranks in the ATC/Air Force have similar names and insignia to Navy ranks (just look at the blue stripes and not the grey ones).
  • Some of the ranks have been altered over time (e.g. Master Cadet, Under Officer). The highest officer rank is only given to a single NZCF officer at a time – the person fulfilling the role of Assistant Commandant.
